THE WAITING ROOM video documentary
2003
50 min
The video documentary is about how we perceive life and time. I started the project from the idea that people are living protected from time and death, people live with the impression of living forever, and trough this they usually are postponing some parts of their life in this endless life line. Only in the proximity of death the things that are really important appear more real than ever, in this circumstance one has to make a violent selection of his/hers life. It is a desperate gesture. Trough this video I was searching for this gestures of choosing, selecting.
I expected spontaneous responses to the questions, so before the filming the people didn’t knew what will be about the interview. The questions were general “How is your life?”, “ Are you contend?”, “Do you have future plans?” and the last one was “ What will you do if you’d find out that you have just a short time to live, like on day?”.
The responses were sincere and direct. In the installation space they created a situation in which people could stay for a talk about dipper problems related to life and personal experience, the coffee was endless, the room was with low light, the couches were comfortable. I called it “slow motion room”, where time was running more slowly than usual.
Trough the video I also got to understand more about the people that I met in Linz. I also met people saying to me that it never occurred to them to ask this kind of questions, one women was amazed looking at the video, a close friend of hers gave me an interview , the woman said that she didn’t knew this thing about her friend’s life…
